Born to civil servant parents Robert and Erma Carwell on August 9, 1944 in Smyrna, Tennessee. Grew up Nashville moved to Kirkwood, Missouri when she was 2.Her parents divorced when she was 10 and moved back to Nashville to be close to her grandparents. She was inspired to be a writer by her mother who always read her poetry.Her siblings incloud Nolan and Sarah. Her favorite place to go Nashville Public Library attended the University of Georgia and graduated with an English degree.She became junior high school English teacher first book was a biography of Paul Lawrence Dunbar Their three sons, Robert Lewis and John and fredrick jr. She won the Coretta Scott King Award, Newbery Honor Award, Orbis Pictus Award She loved to read and was a great student.
