v She was born on February 12 1964 in Columbus, Ohio

v Went to school at the local public schools. She remembers that she loved English class, and “anything to do with writing.”
v When she was in grade school, she wrote a poem about martin Luther king Jr. It was so good that no one believed she could have written it.
v Awards: The Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott Kind Award, Newberry Honor Medal, Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifeline Achievement, National Book Award, ALA Notable, Parent’s Choice Award

Something Interesting:

When she was a toddler, she did a series of advertisements for Alaga Syrup in Ebony Magazine. Even though she was only two, she looked a lot older and the ads that ran often featured her as a school-aged child thinking about Alaga Syrup.
