She spent many years reading fairy tales, myths, and drawing. Her mother was an amateur landscape portrait painter. She had three siblings. She began her career in 1966, and her husband became a collage president. Some of the books she wrote earned a Newbery Honor Medal.
She wrote a book titled Tuck Everlasting, which was adapted to a major motion picture. She attended Smith College, and has three children. Her husband also wrote a book. She is the grandmother of three, and currently lives in Connecticut.
